The Hogar Collection is very pleased to
present name no one man, the upcoming exhibition of recent
paintings and sculpture by Michael Behle and David Choi.
In a palindromic way, their works exist in realms where
the mysterious, yet apparent narratives, can be seemingly
understood simultaneously forwards and backwards. They talk
of ideas that sort of drift in limbo, frozen for our mere
contemplation and amusement. In a way, they reflect a romantic
notion of materiality and give a sense of a worked yet thoughtfully
loose and easy hand. Both Behle and Choi readily utilize
and synthesize notions of humor, the fantastical, symbiotic
relationships, transfiguration and the paranormal. Wrestling
with everything at all times and dealing with the pressures
of the constructed outside world, their works comically
produce and brush off feelings that are wrought with daily
and dramatic uneasiness. They provoke, play and pay attention
to the frivolity of the art-making practice, freeing themselves
to create works that speak about the pleasure of existence
and the importance of an open ended unknowingness.
Michael Behle’s work has been recently exhibited nationally
at venues such as The Contemporary Museum of Art, St. Louis,
The Mitchell Museum, IL and Peter Miller gallery in Chicago
among others. He currently lives and works in St. Louis,
Missouri where he teaches painting and drawing.
David Choi performed at the 2006 Whitney Biennial with his
band Apeshit and has exhibited his sculpture at Rare gallery
in New York among other venues. He lives and works in Brooklyn,
New York.
Both artists received an MFA from Rutgers
University and attended The Vermont Studio Center.
